Hello my friends,
My mantra these past few weeks since we began our full school schedule again quickly became “Just think of the next meal. Just think one meal ahead.”
This means that at supper time, I’m thinking of breakfast - is everything pulled out/defrosting/soaking that needs to be? Will I have enough time in the schedule to prepare that? After breakfast, I think immediately of lunch. And after lunch, supper. It’s a continual cycle that keeps me from feeling overwhelmed - I don’t have to bake, food prep, or plan for a month at a time. This is simply too much for me to contend with. Rather, because I enjoy cooking and I enjoy nourishing food and I enjoy fresh food (versus freezer meals for example) simple popping from one meal to the next keeps it simple.
HOWEVER. This method can only work if you’ve got what you need on hand. For example, if I’ve got corn tortillas in the fridge and various meats in the freezer. Tacos can be at the ready after a few hours of defrosting. Salmon means that any number of bowls and stews can easily be on the menu. High-quality dried pasta is essential. Maple sugar, various flours, spices & herbs, pressure-canned bone broths, tinned fish - all our ingredients that lend themselves to the next meal.
So even if you pick and choose meals from our printable monthly menu, there should be plenty here to wet your palette and inspire you to piece together what you’ve got - substituting, shifting meals, and using leftovers as needed.
I offer you a menu this month curated around our need for covering and comfort. Use our printable menu below to plan and be inspired, invite some friends over, and serve them. Break bread, ask questions, linger for longer, laugh louder. We can create these magical moments - they’re here for the taking.
Here’s 10-days of breakfast, lunch, and dinner to cultivate beauty on your table in the coming weeks. Enjoy.
As a quick reminder, we offer our $7/month paid newsletter supporters two menus each month.
Each printable menu will cover 10-days worth of seasonal meals and will include notes on when to mix sourdough, soak beans, etc. Recipes are linked to newsletters, blog posts, or YouTube videos, as applicable.
Also worth noting, every Cooking Community member also gets access to our menus over on our app. So whether you support The Elliot Homestead here or there, we’ve got you covered. Over in our Cooking Community, we offer 5 new recipes each month, along with instructional cooking videos for each one and an exclusive, private online social community of home-cooks.
