“Shaye, where’s your espresso machine?” This is what my entire Instagram message inbox is filled with. The concern from you all at the ability to caffeinate myself is appreciated. Let’s not forget the time that Stuart gave me decaf coffee because “that’s what we had” and by lunch time I was literally staring at rocks in the dirt wondering why my life felt so defeating and terrible.
“So enof chit-chat. Let’s get down to biznass.” (As my son Owen likes so say/spell).
A few months back, I replaced my signature espresso machine (that’s lived in my kitchen for years) with a repurposed dish cabinet. My kitchen, which sees more action than most, was feeling quite stale and I needed a clean, fresh space of inspiration. The espresso machine wasn’t piped in completely and so the spent water was collected in a glass jar on the floor, surrounded by milk drips and coffee grounds. That’s the kind of mess in the kitchen that drives this homemaker absolutely mad.
And so it was that our espresso machine (which was partially broken anyway) was booted to the “chicken house” - our old chicken coop that we hope to turn into a tiny house one day but instead is currently sitting filled with rejected furniture.
And thus, we entered into a new life of espresso making.
In this weeks video, Stuart and I switching roles in front of the camera for a bit as he shares our set up and technique for home roasting coffee beans. After we roast, I’ll show you our entire new coffee set up and share how we’re making espresso at home now with a $40 piece of equipment.

May your gap week be filled with lots of biscotti… lots of espresso… and lots of love for the people you get to share it with.
Enjoy!
