On Creating Beauty with Limited Resources

Pushing two small children through the grocery store, I filled my shopping cart with specialty items: flaked sea salt, aged balsamic vinegars, sparkling water, and artichokes.
There was no way we could afford such luxury.
After our cart was filled, we traced our steps back through the grocery store and carefully placed each item back on the shelf.
This was my “here’s what I would buy if I had the money” game, which took up time in our day and helped me cope as a struggling young mother.
After putting all of our luxury items back, we filled the cart with our weekly staples: carrots, onions, cabbage, lentils, rice, eggs, flour, and discounted meat.
It was a game we had played before, and one of the many times I learned the art of making “home” during seasons of limited resources.
