Hello my friends,
I’m fully aware of how positively mad I drive my husband on occasion. After so many years of working the farm side by side, he can anticipate my moves with incredibly accuracy and thus, often anticipates what’s brewing in my heart before it comes to the surface. This is both a gift and a curse.
A few days prior to filming this video, I painstakingly cleaned through our root cellar again in an effort to organize another season of food stuff and kitchen overflow. I found myself overwhelmed by the amount of heirloom copper pieces that I’ve collected over the past fifteen years that had no place to live in our kitchen. These are pieces that were brought to our home with not only expense, but also with purpose. I use them constantly. Up and down the root cellar stairs I often trudge, carrying pots and pans back and forth to the stove.
Dusty and defeated, I came back up out of the cellar declaring that it was high-time to get my copper collection in one place finally. This farmhouse kitchen needed some organization - again.
“I knew you were going to say that.” Stuart declared. And I knew that he knew that I was going to say that. Like I said, he can see the storm brewing a mile away. He also knew that I would need his help.
It wasn’t just the copper.
It was the silverware drawer that held all our pieces in one big pile instead of separate ones.
It was accessory drawers with scrunched up drawer liner and bits and bobs that were no longer working or needed.
It was the pot rack that wasn’t long enough to hold all of our working pots!
Sure, there’s gardening to do and a lot of it. So much, in fact, that I feel a bit defeated about that too at the moment. But the core of our home and family is always the kitchen. It doesn’t matter what school tasks, gardening work, or emotional turmoil we’re going through. The people must eat. ALWAYS.
(Y’all they eat so much.)
There’s never an end to the kitchen work, regardless of season, so even though there’s radicchio to transplant and weeds to pull, half a day spent building this shelf for kitchen organization (and sanity of mind) was exactly what was necessary.
In case you’re in need of a little extra kitchen organization as well, I recommend becoming a paid subscriber of our newsletter - I send out two monthly menus that include breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which is incredibly helpful and useful for keeping the kitchen on the rails. And when you become a paid subscriber, you get access to the full archive - so organize and cook to your heart’s content!
I would love to hear from you how you keep your kitchen organized and functional. It is a task that is both highly personal yet equally influenced and made better by community input. Here’s a tip I learned of last year: use lots of Lazy Susans! My vinegars and oils, spices, and even supplements now live on Lazy Susans in my kitchen which is really helpful. I’ve just ordered the biggest one I can for under my kitchen sink… which is a different story entirely…
May your own kitchens be inspired and blessed, my friends. I hope you have a wonderful weekend of beauty and organization!
Cheers,
Shaye
