Hello my friends,
I had a really beautiful call with my Cooking Community members this week in which we explored tasks that we used to find extremely challenging. First attempts at sourdough, sprouting grains, making stock. As we begin, regardless of on what road we’re traveling, we’re always uncertain of our footsteps. We joked about our first loaves of bread, our first attempts that trying this-or-that. All of us shared one thing in common, regardless of every other factor at play: we all had many failed attempts.
The same could certainly be said for something as ordinary as a “day in the life”. What you see portrayed in this video, I assure you, is very normal. The Elliotts have never been about staging, faking, or putting on a front because frankly, we don’t have the time or energy. Still, what you’ll see in this week’s video is a culmination of many, many failed attempts at everything. Failures at parenting, at relating to each other well. Failures in the kitchen, in keeping the house tidy, in remembering to move the laundry from the washing machine before it begins to reek of mildew (which, by the way, Branch Basics oxygen boost works great at getting out… ask me how I know… you can get 15% off their cleaning packages here, use code: SHAYE).
There have been times when we’ve run out of food, run out of money, run out of patience, and run out of ideas on how to keep going. And yet, by the grace of God, somehow each day carries on.
This day we recorded felt like a bit of a cake walk, to be honest. It was spring break, baby! That doesn’t actually mean much when a day-in-the-life is done homestead style. For us, it meant business as usual minus the hours and hours of book-focused effort for our four children. So while you won’t see us dancing in swimsuits on yachts in Miami any time soon, this was a spring break day we were happy to have. (Frankly, I’d much rather be here, laboring in my home and garden than dancing on a yacht anyway).
So come along with Stuart, Georgia, Owen, Will, Juliette, and me as we traverse a lot of family and farm life together. It’s a day-in-the-life, homestead style. Oh - and please enjoy our family Easter picture + my brother-in-law Jeremy who joined in:
See? Totally normal.
I hope you enjoy.
Cheers,
Shaye
PS: Don’t forget to email with any questions you have for Stuart and I and our upcoming exclusive Q&A video. There’s no topic too great or small.
lol! Thank you for being blessedly normal but also inspiring.
